Do Real Estate Agents Get Paid Too Much? Let’s Talk About It.

by Paige Hardy Hill

This is a question I’ve heard a lot: Do real estate agents get paid too much? Honestly, I get it. There’s this perception floating around that agents are just glorified door openers, collecting thousands of dollars simply for unlocking a few doors and setting a couple of appointments. It sounds easy, right? But the reality is far more nuanced.

In my experience, most agents absolutely do not get paid too much—especially the ones doing the job right. Sure, from the outside, it might look like we show up, shake hands, and cash checks. But behind the scenes, there’s a lot more going on.

Real estate is one of those fields that evolves constantly. Take it from those who have been in the business for 20+ years—they’ve seen market crashes, law changes, and even the era before smartphones and GPS. Back then, agents literally had to print out directions or use paper maps just to get to a showing. Every reroute or change in plan meant completely reworking the day. Today, it's easier with technology—but that doesn’t mean our work is less valuable. In fact, it's quite the opposite. With more people thinking they can DIY the process, it’s on us to prove our value more than ever.

Being an agent isn’t just about opening doors or filling out paperwork. It's about understanding people, market trends, contracts, neighborhoods, negotiating strategies, and even psychology. A good agent doesn’t just follow buyers around hoping they find “the one.” We learn our clients' styles, ask the right questions, and anticipate their needs. By the time we’ve toured a few homes, I can usually summarize what’s most important to a buyer, what they’re willing to compromise on, and what would just be a nice bonus. That insight isn’t guesswork—it’s experience.

Then there's the financing side. One of the most common mistakes buyers make is falling in love with homes before figuring out their actual budget. We always stress the importance of speaking with a lender early on—preferably one we trust, who can give realistic monthly payment estimates and purchase price ranges. It saves so much time and heartbreak down the line.

And what happens after closing? Well, in my world, the relationship doesn’t end there. I stay in touch with clients well beyond the transaction—whether it’s checking in, inviting them to events, or helping them connect with local professionals. Buying a home is one of the largest investments most people will ever make. I don’t take that lightly, and I don’t disappear the moment the ink dries on the contract.

So, do real estate agents get paid too much? When we’re doing our jobs the way they should be done—absolutely not. If anything, the best agents are underpaid for the emotional labor, expertise, and time they pour into every client’s journey.
